To Yoga DVD or to Not Yoga DVD?
I just got this yoga video in the mail. It’s the full Ashtanga Primary series with R. Sharath.
Should we be doing our yoga practice in front of the television? Well, simply, Yes. If you don’t do home practice, then anything that serves as a motivator is good by me.
Some days I hit the mat and nothing happens. Some days my practice is sloppy and seemingly pointless. Inside I know and accept that any practice is better than no practice. I tell the lovely peeps in my class this over and over as both a personal reminder and hope-filled motivator to their fine selves.
Today I did the Primary Series in front of the telly, and it busted my bottox, to say the least. I’m still only a few months into restarting my home yoga practice after stopping when my mum died (of all the least helpful times to stop??) 2 years ago. So I’m still puffing, panting aching and struggling with my monkey-mind and tired body. I know from experience that if I just keep it up, my yoga will boot in … it is already. So, for me, right now, this DVD is perfect, especially since the intensive wkshops that I’m attending on the weekend are Ashtanga based.
Visually the video is fine. Aurally it’s easy peasy (no over articulated American accents and schmaltzy new age music). The content is brilliant. The Ashtanga Primary Series is a huge challenge and worth committing to over the long haul; it takes years and years, if not forever, to embody with comfort. OUr 4-year old has already taken to it, so … Just DO IT, as they say.
NEW CLASS INFO: xtra class + wkshop scheduled
XTRA CLASSES SCHEDULED … because the Thursday class is a large, keen and fast learning group.
GENTLE YOGA: Tuesdays, Oct 28 – Nov 25, 7:15 pm – 8:30 pm
TECHNIQUE WKSHOP: Sunday, Nov 30, 10 am – 12:30 pm
EXISTING CLASSES:>

TECHNIQUE WKSHOP: Sunday, Nov 2, 10 am – 12:30pm
CLASS CONTENT:>
Both classes, STRONG YOGA and GENTLE YOGA, are open to everyone.
Classifications of STRONG and GENTLE levels are broadly defined.
Simply, the Thursday class has many beginners who would benefit from more attention and many folks who are ready to accelerate into the next gear. So, Thursday will be pitched higher and Tuesday will be pitched at more fundamental teachings; good for post natal/mature age/beginners/intermediate revision.
Both classes will be beneficial to all participants and I’m expecting that having the choice of an alternative class will be a positive option for everyone.

INSTRUCTOR:>
Your instructor is a 37 y-old mother of one, locally grown, interstate and internationally fertalised, with a passion for all movement arts. She has a B.A in Contemporary Dance and Professional Writing (Deakin Uni) and runs a hybrid production company with her handsome husband here in Launceston: www.brownbreadandbutter.com
She has taught yoga since 1998 to diverse groups and practiced since 1995. Her classes are light hearted.
D believes that good physical and mental health cannot exist independently of each other.
She advocates good life/heart/soul/body through yogic practices taught in a way that’s accessible to everyone. Mixing and crossing physical/mental disciplines is of particular interest to her.
Her base teaching principal is that students inform the class content. She favours guiding independent development over traditional teacher/student learning dynamics. Yoga requires authentic learning; it can’t be faked, so independent enquiry for the practitioner is to be aimed towards. Open communication between instructor and participant is really important to her because participant’s wellbeing is at the core of the practice.
