5. Bec’s Wednesday night Mudclub class has started. She’s looking for feedback from you all about what times would suit best for her, as yet unscheduled, early morning class. Early morning practice is an excellent way to start your day; I recommend it! Here’s her info:

WED 13th JAN, 20th JAN & 27th JAN 2010
Time: 6pm-7:30pm MUD (03) 6334 0033 www.mudclub.com.au
becburns.osteo@gmail.com

I (Bec) plan to continuing teaching at Tasdance (which is such a tranquil and beautiful space) and need your feedback to decide on the ideal time:
We can only use the space in the mornings – so TUESDAY & THURSDAY MORNINGS are best.
As for times, I was thinking: 7am-8:30am or we can do 6:30am-8am for those that need to rush to work…
These morning classes would possibly begin on THURS 21st JAN and run as a complement to Daniela’s Tues night beginners course.
There are change rooms and showers at Tasdance (197 Wellington St) and plenty of FREE parking!
Email me on becburns.osteo@gmail.com if you’d like to share your thoughts.

6. There WILL be a class on Australia Day, Tues 26th Jan and WILL NOT be a class on Tuesday Feb 2nd.
7. Beginners Course is coming along brilliantly. Thanks for your focus and energy. This coming Tuesday we will be introducing Salutes to the Sun to absolute beginners and advancing those with established practice.

Thanks everyone !

D + Bec

Here is a dinky retro video of the Sun Salute sequence. He’s hardly a fashion icon, but technically his salutes are worth a look. Enjoy.

Trish Dunn: yoga and dance teacher back in town

Trish Dunn is teaching contemporary dance classes @ Stompin studio, Monday nights 6-7pm $9.

She is also resuming her beautiful Vinyasa style yoga class after a hiatus while she’s been on tour. Class starts @ 7pm every Thursday @ Tasdance studio (beautiful studio) 197 Wellington St (click for map).

I highly recommend her teaching, both for youth contemporary dance and yoga. She knows what she’s doing, and she’s a doll!

Launceston Yoga Class @ Stompin Resumes Tomorrow

Hello!

After 3 weeks in Japan with James and Rita (hubby and babe), we’re really happy to be back and feel exhilarated from a wonderful adventure. Travel is the best thing for me; it’s a shifter, re-aligner… well yoga’s a brilliant shifter too (and friends can’t be beaten and home is good … and all the other good stuff that moves-us-often.)

I only managed to do one yoga class while in Tokyo, but it was a cracker. It was at a yoga school that I used to go to there nine years ago. Back then it was a crammed room of Ashtanga addicts on the 4th floor above a karaoke bar. Now it’s a street front with shop and 3 floors of studios, plus 2 annex locations. Being there again and seeing the studio’s growth was very inspiring, indeed.

Speaking of dedicated yoga studios, here is some news of a new course @ the Launceston Yoga Centre: Hadie is a really nice teacher. She has a good selection of equipment and books also. You might like to check out her dedicated studio in Brisbane Street: New Ashtanga Yoga Beginner 1 course July 22 – August 21, Weds and Fridays @ 5:45 pm – 7:15, Courses are 5 weeks, ten classes $120. Bookings open. Call Hadie on 0439 910 310

We’re back on deck at Stompin tomorrow morning @ 8:30am, with renewed vigour ~ see you (Early Morning Go Getters) there!

Class Cancelled Due to Vacation (Tokyo here we come!)

I’m taking a trip to Japan for 3 weeks starting at the end of this month. When I return the ongoing Saturday class will resume and a *new* beginner’s course will be scheduled for some time after my return.

Here are the new dates:
Last class, June 20th
No classes, June 27th, July 4th & July 11th
Class resumes, July 18th

On another note: I’m still sorting out dates for the beginner’s course. Any feedback on day, time and seasonal preferences would be appreciated, ie evenings, saturday mornings, 2 classes p/week, just one class p/week, scheduled for asap or early spring??

The ARC in Wellington St has the following classes, fyi. I’ve not had a chance to attend their classes yet, but I hear they’re good.
Monday evening at 6.30pm – Gentle Flow Yoga with Carrie
Wednesday evening at 5.30pm – Dynamic Flow Yoga with Monika
Saturday morning at 10.30am – Flow Yoga with David

It’s All About the Space

The search for a new space to take yoga classes in this year has been a wee trial. The Tasdance space of last year was a special thing indeed, especially with that glassed garden view. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to secure the same times for the entire year in advance. I’d noticed that quite a few people like the option to attend in a drop-in class. At least half of the group likes the commitment of pay-in-advance style. Continuing at Tasdance made drop-in attendance impossible.

With that phase over, we enter a new one in a new space and it’s a doozie. Here t’is:

I promised myself last year that if I couldn’t find a good space that was free for the full year long, I’d not teach at all. Reason being is that the space is all-important; it’s all about the space!

The new studio has bags of character and is home to Launceston’s precious Stompin youth contemporary dance company. Sarah, the company’s GM, has been super easy going and open about our making ourselves at home in her company’s space. The facilities are perfect: loo, great audio system, hot drinks, beautiful floor, lots of light & a couch and table corner for a cuppa after class.

I’ve just returned from Melbourne where I did an Ashtanga Primary Series class with a teacher I’ve not met before. He was a hard-liner; bags of rules, looked like a small army man, take-no-shit attitude, rules rules rules. I loved him! What a goose! He doesn’t like yoga tourists and asked those on tour to leave. Officially he could have been speaking to me, but I like small hard Irishmen, so I took the risk and stood there pretending to be a hard-core Ashtanga yoga head.

At one moment he came over and made an adjustment on me in Virabhadrasana A and the way he held and spoke, in that briefest of moments, was no mean Irish task master. It was a gentle souled, open man. Something happens each time I do yoga. Something inside me tells me something that feels good and right to hear. A good teacher, no matter what theire teaching method is, can make it easier and safer for us to stand and wait and listen for the important stuff.

The class smelt horrid. People were sweating like hairy monsters. As I always do, standing is a horror posture, I questioned what draws me to this room with these people, why do I continue? I’m not sure exctly why, but it has something to do with love. Perhaps it’s as simples as just loving yoga. But it stinks and the people are mostly a tad … kind of odd, to me, but I dig them and what we’re all trying to learn. I’m unsure what it is, but I’m in for life.

Review of 08 SPRING YOGA

Review of 08 SPRING YOGA with D @ the Tasdance Studio, Launceston

Class sizes and content grew very quickly from August to now, so Tuesdays were added to the regular Thursday nights @ the yummy Tasdance Studio. Turned out to be a good idea (more space, more attention, more detail, more personal).I’ve seen faster progress in just one month on account of the Tuesday class. So, all good!

Class participants have been mixed yoga levels, mixed ages and mostly women who work in a huge variety of fields out there in ol’ Lonnie Town. This I like. Great group! I really appreciate the variety of people and what they give back to me. Teaching you all has been challenging and rewarding and often funny…very funny. I’ve seen huge growth in yoga knowledge amongst all. Been very inspiring indeed so I’m hoping a new season of classes will be on offer next year. I’ve just found out that I can’t rent the Tasdance studio next year, which was in the wind, so I’m on the hunt for a space. Here’s wishing for a beautie.

There’s talk (inside the caverns of my wee mind) of a newer better venue, more classes scheduled, kids and parents classes, importing some hot teachers for weekend retreats perhaps … but no confirmation as yet. I’m still ticking it over, slowly – slowly.

Thanks to all of you fine fellow yoga lovers. It’s been a treat to hang in the studio with you all and my commitment to yoga has deepened thanks to your input. I’m a student of yoga before I’m an instructor, so please know that hanging out with you in the studio gives me MORE that you could imagine.

Have a great Chrissy!
With Love and Thanks,
D

Sunday Technique Workshop: Nov 30th, 10-12:30 am

Sunday Technique Workshop: Nov 30th, 10-12:30 am
This workshop is designed to give you clearer inroads into your postures through simple techniques that are often not given attention in class due to time limits. The group size will be small so it could be a good opportunity for you to ask questions about your problem postures; troubleshooting them together is usually fun and interesting. Breathing and meditation techniques for stress relief will also be given close attention. All in all, if you are interested in developing your home practice, this wkshop will give you some fine food for thought.

NEW CLASS INFO: xtra class + wkshop scheduled

XTRA CLASSES SCHEDULED … because the Thursday class is a large, keen and fast learning group.
GENTLE YOGA: Tuesdays, Oct 28 – Nov 25, 7:15 pm – 8:30 pm
TECHNIQUE WKSHOP: Sunday, Nov 30, 10 am – 12:30 pm

STRONG YOGA: Thursdays, Sept. 11 – Nov 27, 7:15 pm – 8:30 pm
TECHNIQUE WKSHOP: Sunday, Nov 2, 10 am – 12:30pm

CLASS CONTENT:>
Both classes, STRONG YOGA and GENTLE YOGA, are open to everyone.
Classifications of STRONG and GENTLE levels are broadly defined.
Simply, the Thursday class has many beginners who would benefit from more attention and many folks who are ready to accelerate into the next gear. So, Thursday will be pitched higher and Tuesday will be pitched at more fundamental teachings; good for post natal/mature age/beginners/intermediate revision.
Both classes will be beneficial to all participants and I’m expecting that having the choice of an alternative class will be a positive option for everyone.

HOW TO BOOK:>
Bookings are still required as class sizes are quite large.
Email or phone to reserve your place and an invoice will be sent electronically.
Payment denotes booking confirmation.

FEES:>
10 session ticket = $120.00
6 session ticket = $90.00
4 session ticket = $60.00

STUDIO FACILITIES:>
The studio is the time-honoured home of Launceston’s Contemporary Dance Company TasDance, so it’s well loved and full of character. It’s large with a wonderful tarquette floor on wood. It has a good audio system, lots of windows and it’s well heated. Allow time to find a park because the internal parking space can fill quickly. There are showers toilets and change-room facilities.

ADDRESS:>
Tasdance Studio
197 Wellington Street
Launceston, Tasmania

INSTRUCTOR:>
Your instructor is a 37 y-old mother of one, locally grown, interstate and internationally fertalised, with a passion for all movement arts. She has a B.A in Contemporary Dance and Professional Writing (Deakin Uni) and runs a hybrid production company with her handsome husband here in Launceston: www.brownbreadandbutter.com

She has taught yoga since 1998 to diverse groups and practiced since 1995. Her classes are light hearted.

D believes that good physical and mental health cannot exist independently of each other.
She advocates good life/heart/soul/body through yogic practices taught in a way that’s accessible to everyone. Mixing and crossing physical/mental disciplines is of particular interest to her.

Her base teaching principal is that students inform the class content. She favours guiding independent development over traditional teacher/student learning dynamics. Yoga requires authentic learning; it can’t be faked, so independent enquiry for the practitioner is to be aimed towards. Open communication between instructor and participant is really important to her because participant’s wellbeing is at the core of the practice.
